Absense (the absence of sense)
Eggs and sperm
I don't need you, I just want you
Ek is lief vir jou, Maria

"Absense" (the absence of sense) was started by me in early 2012 as just a vocal and guitar. Then my friend JP Hewett came to the studio and we added all types of percussion goodness... before Brett Wood added clarinet, valved trombone, accordion, hammond M2 organ and a very out of tune upright piano.
"Eggs and Sperm" was one of the first songs I ever wrote, though I didn't record it until early 2013. I recorded all the guitars and percussion (which is just me hitting my guitar and playing on it like a snare drum with brushes), and after a rough mix my friend Mike Reilly came in and added some diddley bow (a slide guitar made out of a pool cue and a cigar box), before my friend Marco Savoia added some upright bass to finish it off.
"I don't need you..." was recorded sometime in 2009. It's just me playing banjo and singing.
"Ek is lief vir jou, Maria." was written and recorded at the end of 2012 as an homage to my lover. It started out as just my voice and a couple of different ukuleles. My friend Brett Wood added some accordion that we made sound like a harmonium with some recording trickery, and I added some electric guitar. My lady Maria sang some back up vocals and finally Marco Savoia added some upright bass as well as the trumpet part that Brett and I tripled to give it that mariachi sound.
